Arrival in Oldenburg

There are three international airports close to Oldenburg: Bremen (50km), Hamburg (160km), and Hanover (170km). You have good transport links from all three airports either by bus, taxi, or suburban railway to the respective main stations and from there by train to Oldenburg.

Please note: Carl von Ossietzky University is located in Oldenburg in Oldenburg in Lower Saxony, there is another Oldenburg which is situated in Holstein. The German railway company (Deutsche Bahn) provides information on the timetables at www.bahn.de.

You should not arrive on a Saturday, a Sunday, or a public holiday. Note that October 3 is a public holiday.

It is best if you can manage to arrive in Oldenburg prior to the orientation week. To participate in the International Student Office‘s offers during orientation week is very important to handle certain formalities but also to get to know the campus, the city, and other students.

"Ich komme aus Moskau und habe mich für die Magisterstudiengänge „Kunst und Medien“ und „Geschichte“ an der Universität Oldenburg entschieden.
Oldenburg ist sehr ruhig. Im Sommer ist es sehr schön ein Buch im Stadtpark zu lesen oder an der Hunte entlang zu
spazieren. Im Winter sind der Lambertimarkt, der Glühwein und die gebratenen Kastanien ein Grund sich von einem Buch abzulenken".

If you managed to get in contact with your buddy prior to your arrival and told him your arrival date and time, he will pick you up at the station. You may as well take the bus or a taxi to get to your accommodation.
If you will be staying in private lodging you should arrange, your time of arrival with your landlord. If you have a place in one of the halls of residence you need to arrive in Oldenburg during office hours of the student services (Studentenwerk)

If you will catch the bus to university, it is either number:

• 306 direction „Universität“,
• 310 direction „Wehnen“,
• 324 direction „Infanterieweg“ und
• 350 direction „Westerstede“.

All buses leave about four times an hour at the central bus station ZOB (back side of the train station).

First Steps

Housing

If you arrive in Oldenburg and do not have a room yet, this is the first thing you should care about. At German universities there are no housings for students available on campus. So you might at first book a room in the youth hostel for a few days, they charge about 16€ per night including breakfast. Coming from the train station the youth hostel is about 15 minutes by foot.

With a place to stay for the next few days you can start hunting for a room. There are several possibilities:

Student Housing

Most of the halls of residence run by the student service are close to the university. There are single and double apartments with kitchen and bathroom. But there are also flats with three or more rooms for joint residence (WGs), or single rooms with shared kitchen and bathrooms on the hall. All of the housings have shared facilities for washing and drying, lockable parking for bikes and cable TV in every room. For 12€ a month you will find Internet in every room.

Private lodging

You can find privately rented rooms in numerous sizes and at different price levels. A room in a joint residence may cost you usually between 150€ and 300€. Single rooms as well as single apartments are often more expensive. There are several boards for announcements on campus in central areas such as the cafeteria – sometimes there are so many offers of student apartments or rooms in joint residence the boards almost collapse.

In the regional daily called NWZ (Nordwestzeitung) you will find announcements for housing in the so called „Kleinanzeiger“ on Tuesdays and Saturdays. This paper can be purchased for about one Euro at the train station or any kiosk.

The student service also runs an accommodation bureau for furnished apartments for international students.
